The monsters of 2007

At a time when camera phones bear eyewitness to every spectacle and a hastily delivered text message can spread news in a heartbeat, could we still believe in giant mountain men with hypertrichosis?

In other words, Bigfoot and his friends still haunt our imagination and our searches. While celebrity antics and serious news preoccupied the bulk of Internet attention in 2007, a significant number of people hunted the paranormal and the legendary online. "Ghosts" led the list of imaginary creatures.

Queries into these wandering souls were on par with 2006, but a resurgence in those whose jobs it is to reach out to these restless apparitions enjoyed a 30% increase in searches: "ghost hunters," "taps ghost hunters," the size 2 "Ghost Whisperer," and the movies "Ghost Rider" and "Ghostbusters" all surged this year.

Perhaps coincidentally, 2007 seemed friendly to those who fight the forces of evil. While number three "vampires" saw a slight drop-off in queries, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" had a Search resurgence, likely spiked (so to speak) because of its life as a comic strip and the continued rumors of another cinematic treatment. Of course, Bram Stoker's literary icon "Dracula" vamped his way into the top 10, nearly (but not quite) matched by Mary Shelley's monstrously tragic creation.

Actual sightings might explain our continued faith in these fey beings: A flood of reports came in fall 2007 regarding goat suckers and multiple Nessies in China.cryptozoology never cease. Below is a round-up of these elusive creatures that lurked in Search this year. May the wonders of
